Otello Scatolini: Art That Bridges Eras

Innovation and Tradition in Italian Sculpture

Born in Rome in 1964, Otello Scatolini began exploring the art of sculpture from a young age, working in his father’s marble workshop. Graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome under the guidance of renowned professors such as Emilio Greco and Venanzo Crocetti, Otello has honed his craft in an art form that merges tradition with innovation. With a career spanning over three decades, he has exhibited in prestigious galleries and contributed to significant projects, such as works commissioned by the City of Rome and the Vatican. His sculptures not only adorn both public and private spaces, but they also carry stories of culture, history, and humanity. Currently, Otello continues to inspire and teach as a marble sculpture instructor at the Schools of Arts and Crafts of the Municipality of Rome.

Marble, the ultimate material.

Yet, contaminating its purity initially felt like violating a living being, for marble itself almost seems alive. However, deep down, I was certain of my actions. It was the right thing to do, a prelude to something great.

One day, the Great Spirit, through an old friend who is an art historian, asked me, “Why not contaminate the marble?

Having worked exclusively with marble and gained extensive knowledge of various materials, including transparent resin, from over thirty years in set design, I decided to integrate it into the marble. The end result closely resembles water.

I find this technique particularly intriguing due to its clarity and the diverse materials I can embed within. The magic lies in how the transparent resin and the enclosed materials interact differently based on my approach, thoughts, words, and actions. Thus, the final outcome is a product of collaboration.

Sometimes, solutions and answers come unexpectedly, as if by magic, and they work, often contrary to my expectations. Yet, the results are invariably stunning.

Within the transparent resin, I can also embed water, which holds immense importance and is fundamental for its memory-retaining qualities.

In all this, the marble co-creates the reality and the artwork with its pure vibration. Long ago, artists would pray and meditate before starting their work, connecting with the divine for guidance and inspiration for new creations. This is why masterpieces were born, inspired by the divine rather than the clutter we accumulate in our subconscious.

We should follow our intuition, not our instinct, which is still tied to our reptilian brain.

It’s crucial to strive to remove our masks and not try to be this or that, or even ourselves, but rather to simply be.

Sculptures, Drawings, and Notes

Otello Scatolini plants words in his sculptures: words as smooth as stones in water, words that slide and generate a vibration in our souls.

Thoughtful words, whose meanings are almost erased, yet enough remains to compel us to confront his works as readers of signs. In this way, the artist moves us beyond mere aesthetic appreciation and stirs questions and logical consequences in us, not just because of the written word, but because of the vibration it emits as sound.

Indeed, Otello Scatolini presents us with sound sculptures for this exhibition: the word vibrates from stone to water—resin—and resonates within our deepest self.

Thus, from the marriage of opposites, between the fluid and the solid, the word becomes the celebrant of a union that achieves harmony: chiseled and smoothed like a precious secret held by the stone, it adds the element of air that echoes in our minds with those whispered, vital sounds.

The Art of Duplication

An artist’s creative process and Keyline values. Keyline’s 2018 corporate campaign, launched by the video titled “The Art of Duplication” describes the strength conferred by experience coupled with the power of new ideas to the search for perfection and unique creations. The images show master sculptor Otello Scatolini at work on a reproduction of the Ninja Total key cutting machine, the symbol of Keyline next generation design and technology, which he is sculpting from a half-ton chunk of Carrara marble. The choice of material introduces the viewer to a fascinating world of knowledge and intuitions that in the workshop are hard, but also an exciting daily toil. There is a suggestion that this ancient art and the heights of modern technology are running on parallel tracks. Inspiration, meticulous attention to details and a long history are the Keyline values highlighted by the work of art. The campaign “The Art of Duplication” starts with the 2018 calendar and then is developed online and through social media. The concept shows the passion that Keyline puts into creating precision tools that professional locksmiths use to express their art, in the best Italian tradition.

The teaching of marble sculpting is not passed down through books or manuals, but through verbal and practical interaction within the artisan’s workshop. Today, machines can assist in preparing the sculpture, but before, during, and after this process, human input is crucial for the successful creation of the sculpture.

The human machine is much more complex than any other, and it is the only one that can bring vitality to the artwork, especially with the essential contributions of one’s soul and the love one puts into their work.
